Jules Cheret

Jules Chéret (born 1836) was a French painter and lithographer renowned as the "father of the modern poster." Born in Paris to a family of artisans, he began a lithographic apprenticeship at age 13 and later studied at the École Nationale de Dessin. After honing his craft in London, Chéret returned to Paris, where his vibrant, Rococo-inspired posters for venues like the Moulin Rouge and Folies Bergère revolutionized advertising and public art. His iconic "Chérette" figures—joyous, elegant women—became symbols of Belle Époque Paris and helped elevate the status of commercial art. Awarded the Légion d'Honneur in 1890, Chéret's legacy endures through his innovative designs and lasting influence on graphic arts.
