Erte aka Romain de Tirtoff

Romain de Tirtoff, better known by his pseudonym Erté, was born in 1892 and became a pioneering figure of the Art Deco movement, celebrated for his sophisticated fashion illustrations. Between 1915 and 1937, he contributed more than 240 covers to Harper's Bazaar and worked closely with iconic designers such as Paul Poiret. Erté's influence extended beyond illustration into theater, film, and costume design, including collaborations with the Folies-Bergère and Broadway’s George White’s Scandals. In the later years of his career, he reinvented himself with lithographs, sculptures, and jewelry, solidifying his lasting legacy in the art world. Today, his works are held in prestigious collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
