Albrecht Durer

Albrecht Dürer, born in 1471 in Nuremberg, was a German painter, printmaker, and theorist celebrated as the greatest artist of the German Renaissance. He gained early acclaim for his masterful woodcuts and engravings, including Knight, Death and the Devil (1513), Saint Jerome in His Study (1514), and Melencolia I (1514). His travels to Italy introduced classical art and humanist ideals to Northern European art, notably incorporating classical motifs and the nude figure. Dürer also authored influential works on geometry, perspective, and human proportions. His innovative techniques and theoretical writings left a lasting impact on Western art.
